My research focuses on the development of a new type of photobioreactor in which biofuel-secreting cyanobacteria, grown under microflow conditions on planar waveguide surfaces, are uniformly photoexcited by evanescent field coupling. When thin waveguides are stacked to form wide microchannels, volumetric cell density using this cultivation scheme is potentially orders of magnitude greater than that of traditional photobioreactors, the productivities of which suffer primarily from an inefficient use of direct light.
