“I have always been passionate about sustainable energy, especially for the storage of renewable energy. I am currently developing organic redox-active carbon composites using waste biomass, which can help promote sustainable and environmentally benign materials use in high-performance energy storage devices such as supercapacitors. Receiving this scholarship is a great appreciation of our work, and also serves as motivation for me to be a better researcher and contribute more to the scientific community and society at large.”– Raunaq Bagchi
“During my studies, this award has supported my research concerning the role of hydroelectric resources in a deeply decarbonized electricity grid. I am grateful to receive this award, and for the vision and commitment shown by Hatch in creating and continuing their support.” – Richard Hendriks
“Receiving this award meant that someone else believed in my work, giving me motivation to keep going in the lab even when experiments fail. Thank you again for all your support.”
– Yurou Xiao
Through a generous donation from Hatch Ltd., the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering is pleased to award these scholarships to students registered in either a Master of Applied Science (MASc) program or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in the Faculty.
Purpose: These awards are intended to fund research and training of world-class researchers and engineers in the fields of recovery and utilization of energy derived sustainably from the sun and other sources. They focus specifically on power generation from photovoltaic solar cells, wind turbines and hydraulic turbines, systems for the efficient utilization of thermal and electrical energy derived sustainably, and energy storage by batteries, pumped hydro, molten salts, compressed air, and other means.
Value: Every year, 10-15 students in the faculty receive $10,000 each.
Next application deadline: January 30, 2024
